19th November 2017
Worksop Town 2-8 Huddersfield Town Devs
The Development team progressed to the last 16 of the County Cup with an impressive 8-2 victory away at Worksop Town with 10 men.
Tired legs from last weeks emphatic League cup victory over Blackburn Rovers were still present but with only 11 players the girls put everything and more into what could have been a tricky encounter.
Worksop, new to the Sheffield and Hallamshire league, were unbeaten before the visit of the Terriers and made Town fight hard for the victory.
Town came out all guns blazing and went 2-0 up within the opening 14 minutes when Amy Broomhead and Katie Halligan calmly finished efforts from close range following good build up play from Emily Cook and Ella McCamon.
Town continued to pile on the pressure and should have been at least 5-0 up before Broomhead cleared well off her own line following a Worksop corner but the potential match changing incident occurred moments later.
Stand in keeper Rose Priestley’s short dead ball was miscontrolled by Halligan and was robbed by the oncoming striker, the skipper instinctively opting to haul down the opponent who had a clear run on goal. The referee had no choice but to show a straight red card.
The resulting free kick was saved well by Priestley but was followed up well for the Worksop striker to poke home.
HT: 1-2
A change of formation and goalkeeper set up with down going out to defend their league.
As expected Worksop came at Town for the first 10 minutes and were unlucky not to equalise when the number 10’s long range effort crashed off the outside of Faye Chadwick’s far post.
However Town remained resilient and their hard work was rewarded when Laura Walker released Broomhead through the middle with the striker striking the ball first time from 25 yards into the top corner of the net leaving the keeper no chance.
Town now had the momentum with Jodie Lodge and McCamon pulling the strings for the final half an hour.
McCamons long range effort was fumbled into the net by the unfortunate Worksop keeper and Broomhead went on to score her 3rd and 4th goals of the game.
Worksop pulled one back but MOM Jodie Lodge opened her account for the season with a fine finish after being put through on goal to sign off a fantastic individual performance.
A very professional performance from the team with some great individual and team goals. Town return to league action next week with a testing home tie against Bradford City Reserves, 2pm ko.
