SECOND HALF COMEBACK PUTS TOWN WOMEN INTO THE NEXT ROUND

Huddersfield Town Women came back from two goals down to win the game 3-2 in the third round of the Women’s FA Cup against Loughborough Foxes. Kate Mallin scored the winner for the Terriers after two first half goals from Becky McGrother were cancelled out by Town’s Lucy Sowerby and Ellie White. Victory sees Huddersfield in the fourth-round draw as they try to replicate last season’s heroic FA Cup run which ended in the fifth round to West Ham United.

Huddersfield were 6-0 winners in their previous meeting with Loughborough in the league, however, hope of repeating this scoreline was quickly lost as the foxes showed clear improvement in their playstyle early into the game. Loughborough went ahead on the half-hour mark following a perfectly timed cross to goalscorer Becky McGrother, who volleyed the ball at close range to the keepers left. Just before half time McGrother scored again following a mix-up between Town’s defenders that allowed her to face the keeper 1on1.

The second half showed vast improvement from Huddersfield as more chances were created and the Foxes goalkeeper was tested more. In the 66thminute Town got a goal back from the head of Lucy Sowerby who headed a close-range cross by Kate Mallin. Mallin was involved in the set-up for the second goal as her clever passing found Ellie White who slotted the ball into the right side of the goal in the 77th minute.

Huddersfield’s comeback was complete just 2 minutes later when Mallin scored from a rebounded shot off the foxes’ goalkeeper. The terriers held on to the delight of manager Ashley Vickers.
