Huddersfield Town Women equalled their biggest away win of the season as they hammered Middlesbrough Women 6-0 on Teeside on Sunday afternoon.

The hosts actually started the brighter side, posing a real threat from set pieces, but as soon as Town took the lead, there was only ever going to be one winner.

​

The visitors took opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Laura Elford slotted home from close range following great work from Kate Mallin down the right flank, and the two combined to assist Lucy Sowerby's a little over ten minutes later.

​

Sowerby's twelfth goal of the season was a carbon copy of Elford's opener and Mallin then got on the scoresheet herself after a horrendous error from the 'Boro 'keeper gifted her the ball 25 yards from goal and the winger made no mistake, firing the ball into the net.

​

Last season provided a much closer contest between the two sides, with the hosts prevailing 3-2 after digging deep for the win, and they showed similar spirit in this one, too.

​

Despite the scoreline, the home side continued to play out from the back, implementing their style of play on the game and came close when a header was sent over the bar when the attacker should have done much better.

​

The home fans were hopeful that this might have spurred their side on to get back in the contest, but instead it purely woke the Terriers up and they got right back in business on 65 minutes.

​

The move started from Lauren Joyce in goal as her long ball found Sarah Danby on halfway who took it down brilliantly on her chest before spraying the play out wide to Mallin who laid it off for Beth Stanfield to unleash a rocket into the top corner to put the game beyond all doubt.

​

From then on, wave after wave of Huddersfield pressure bombarded the home defence and, despite a brilliant reaction save from Laura Wareham in the Middlesbrough goal, Leah Embley got her third goal in two matches when she slotted home following a goalmouth scramble.

​

And there was even time for Emma Samways to come off the bench and net her first senior goal. The speedy attacker raced clear of the defence to bear down on goal and pass the ball into the bottom corner to round off a simply brilliant performance.

​

After beating Sheffield FC 7-2 in their previous game, the win serves as perfect preparation for next weekend's FA Cup second round trip to Stoke City, a ground on which Huddersfield dramatically won 4-3 in the dying moments last season.

 

Couple this with 2018/19's unforgettable Cup run and Town fans will surely be dreaming of another memorable day in Staffordshire.
