29th March 2017 Huddersfield Town Ladies lifted the S&H Challenge Cup at their fourth attempt after a thrilling encounter at SGP Graves last night. They avenged the defeat to Barnsley in last year's final but, this was far from an easy victory.
Town started the brighter and went ahead in the 7th minute when Katie Nutter played through Emily Heckler who outpaced the defender and finished into the bottom corner.
A few minutes later and Kate Mallin set up Heckler for another opportunity but she couldn't convert.
Barnsley were looking to catch Town on the counter attack and they were a constant threat with their pacey attack.
Town became frustrated by Barnsley's defiance and although looking reasonably comfortable at the back never looked to be in full control of the game.
In the 43rd minute, Town lost the ball on the halfway line and Barnsley punished them with a good break and finish from their striker Amy Woodruff.
Half time 1-1
Town came out better organised in the second half and they played a much better game.
Mallin played in Heckler in the 55th minute but she shot wide. Just a minute later and Mallin half volleyed just over the Barnsley crossbar.
Barnsley were still a threat with the long ball over the top but, Town's defence were better placed to deal with it.
As the game drew on Heckler then hit the post and also chipped the goalkeeper only to see the ball run wide of the goal.
With only 3 minutes remaining and extra time looming, Town played the best move of the match. Mallin received the ball on the edge of the Barnsley area with her back to goal, she set the ball back to Danni Biglin who crossed it into the area and second half substitute Hannah Spreckley rose to bullet a header past the Barnsley keeper.
The celebrations started and Town held on for a deserved win.
