SEASON 2017/18
League Cup 3rd September 2017
Newcastle United 0 - 3 Huddersfield Town
Kate Mallin (2), Hannah Campbell.
Town travelled up to Newcastle to play the determining round of the FA Women's Premier League Cup.
Immediately Emily Heckler was almost through on goal but for a good interception by the Newcastle centre half. In the fifth minute Town were ahead when Heckler put Kate Mallin through who calmly went around the keeper and slot it home, 0-1.
Newcastle gradually came into the game and some good football by Newcastle resulted in a block by Alex Hindwood which gave them their first corner of the game.
The referee was frustrating Town and a number of well timed challenges were judged as fouls and Newcastle were given a few unnecessary sighters at goal.
With 17 minutes gone, a challenge by Evans results in a free kick but, it was safely collected by Charlie Kenyon in Town's goal.
There was some fantastic work done by Town's midfield and particularly the pressing by Annabelle Cass in the final third.
As the half neared its end, Newcastle had a chance, when a whipped delivery was headed wide by the forward.
Another free kick forced a good save from Kenyon, the resulting corner was cleared but another free kick conceded but, it came to nothing.
In added time a ball over the top by Mallin was chased by Heckler who shot inches wide!
Half time 0-1, with the wind not helping either team.
Into the second half and some good build up play, Nutter out to Heckler, back inside to Nutter who's strike just floats over the bar, (55 mins). 3 minutes later and some great work down the right by Cass is followed by a cracking cross, narrowly put wide by Heckler.
On the hour a fantastic free kick delivered by Mallin into a dangerous area, the keeper comes to collect and is apparently fouled. A minute later and Heckler is again marginally wide with her effort, but chances were coming thick and fast for Town.
In the 81st minute Cass with a great strike, is saved by the Newcastle goalkeeper and smashes off the post.
With 5 minutes remaining Heckler is played in down the left, selflessly plays in her counterpart Mallin, who slots into the empty net, 0-2.
Pressure by second half sub Hannah Campbell leads to confusion between keeper and centre half, Campbell pounces and makes it 3-0 87th minute.
In the 89th minute a Newcastle corner falls for the striker who fires over.
As the final minute goes a brace from Mallin & one for Campbell are enough to seal the win.
Player of the match was Emily Heckler for her tireless work rate and having a hand in all 3 goals.
Next Sunday the first team are back in league action when they entertain last seasons league champions Blackburn Rovers, 2pm ko at Shelley FC.
